Violence in Universities

Importance of quality education cannot be denied in present era of science and technology. For smooth and rapid progress of any country, quality education is a must which can only be achieved in a peaceful environment.

Unfortunately, our educational institutions are flooded with violent clashes. Recently, there were violent clashes among various students’ groups at Punjab University, Quaid-e-Azam University and University of Malakand. The growing incidents of violence are causing confusion regarding the role of educational institutions, which are important for analyzing time-to-time needs and moving forward towards reforms.

Killing of students or clashes among them on the base of religion, sectionalism, provincialism, linguistic, etc. reflect the seriousness of crisis. Such type of events cannot be tackled temporarily in the form of lodging FIRs or arresting some students. Such issues can only be tackled through strengthening foundation of knowledge and updating curriculum on modern lines.

Unfortunately, students are not focusing on current curriculum due to varying reasons. Due to shortcut culture, students’ link with textbooks is gradually breaking and they are relying on notes, guides and other such helping material. Such material proves to be sweet poison for the creativity of students. Some publishers are even publishing books without examining quality of text. In such a condition, dreaming bright future of the nation is merely a stupidity.

Curriculum is the backbone of education system. At the time of preparation of the curriculum, experts have to go through very difficult stages while considering social, religious and political needs of the country and the society so that young generation can join race of development. But with regret, we are merely producing degree holders in our universities. No intellectuals and experts are being produced due to the outdated curriculum.

Authorities need to pay immediate attention to this crucial matter. Supervisory bodies need to carefully examine the curriculum and make it more realistic and practical so that it may help to build nation. Policymakers must seriously think and get the curriculum updated as per needs of nation while considering history, values, heroes, etc. to prepare a generation with high moral values and high esteem.i
