LAHORE: In connection with the celebrations of 100 years of information management & library science education at University of the Punjab, the Department of Information Management
organized an International Conference on Information Management and Libraries (ICIML) during November 10-14, 2015.The theme of this centennial celebration conference was “Looking Back, Moving Forward”. The response of the Information Management Professionals was very overwhelming with 450 registered delegates from all over the country besides foreign delegates were
invited from Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, India), Middle East (Iran,
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait), Africa (Nigeria), Europe (Turkey, France), UK and USA were in attendance.
Three parallel pre-conference workshops were conducted on November 10, 2015. The topics of these workshops were 1: Strategic planning; 2: Data mining; and 3: Communication skills. All three workshops were very well attended and appreciated.
Minister for Education Punjab Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan was the chief guest of
the inaugural ceremony on 11th October.
The Conference Chair, Dr. Kanwal Ameen in her welcome address narrated the 100 years journey of the department from a certificate course to PhD level of education and from one room to a proper independent building.
Three keynote speeches were delivered by Professor Sanda Erdelez (USA), Professor Yasar
Tonta (Turkey) and Professor Widad Mustafa El Hadi
(France) at the beginning of every day during the conference. Eighty authors contributed 57 presentations including 3 keynote speeches, 13 invited papers, 15 full papers, 9 short papers, 7 best practices and 10 short presentations (PechaKuchas) on following topics: “Education and training”, “Best Practices”, “Information literacy”, “Library Management Practices”. Bibliometric and Citation Analysis”, Professional Development”, Miscellaneous” Digital Libraries and E-Resources” and “Web Technologies and Social Media”.
In the concluding session Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab Dr. Kamran Mujahid appreciated the organizers of the conference, faculty and the leadership qualities of Professor Dr. Kanwal Ameen. He also said that the conference has opened the door for international connectivity at the departmental level and it should be continued. He appreciated the energy and interest of the participants from the very first session till the closing.
Addressing the ceremony, Dr Kanwal Ameen said that young students and local professionals had exchanged experiences with international experts during this conference. She said that quality research papers have been presented in the conference and all the participants have learnt a lot from different perspectives. She thanked the Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran for his support. She also thanked her team and all the speakers and the delegates for making the conference a great success. In the concluding session ‘Certificates of Acknowledgment’ were also distributed among the senior faculty members and distinguished alumnae of the Dept. The conference also included cultural/music night on the November 12, 2015, and a visit to Lahore Shahi Qila and Mosque and a Shopping trip.
The conference was a great success according to the opinion expressed by the seniors, youngsters, foreign and local participants and earned a lot pf praise for very well organization by all concerned ones throughout the conference.
