LAHORE: The public and private universities of the city must focus on increasing student to PhD teacher ratio which compared to the international standard is unsatisfactory with PU at 73:1, UET 86:1, UCP 86:1, UMT 100:1 and UoL 146:1. The world standard of this ratio is minimum at 25:1, however, for lab studies it is around 10:1.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE), Medical College of Wisconsin (US) was placed at the top with the ratio 0.6 as it has the more faculty than students. The Oregon Health and Science University (US) stood 2nd with 1.1, Rush University (US) 3rd with 2.1, Showa University (Japan) 2.5 and University of Nebrasaka Medical Center (US) 2.6.
HEC guides standard at 12:1 for lab research studies and 20:1 for other disciplines.
University of the Punjab (PU), established in 1882 at Lahore, is the largest and the oldest seat of higher learning in Pakistan. It was the first to be established in the sub-continent in Muslim majority area. The University comprises of 5 Campuses, 13 Faculties, 10 Constituent Colleges, over 73 Departments, Centers, Institutes, and 614 affiliated colleges. PU has around 36,000 on-campus students, 1109 teachers out of which 589 are PhD showing STR of 32:1 and Student to PhD teacher ratio of 73:1.
Its student societies have won a lot of distinction under the patronage of vice chancellor and supervision of Shahid Gul and Zubair Ahmed. PU has 15 faculties, 73 departments, 87 Master level programs, 44 B.A./B.Sc. 4 years (Hons.) Programs, 70 M.S/M.Phil Programs, 46 PhD. Programs, B. Pharmacy to 5 years Pharm D, LLB programme and Self-Supporting Programs in almost all department.
The University claims three Nobel Laureate and people in all walks of life in the country and abroad. Quaid-i-Azam Campus is spread over an area of 1,800 acres.
University of Engineering and Technology (UET) established in 1921, it is one of the best institutions of higher learning in the country and ranks among one of the top ten universities in “engineering technology category” by HEC. In addition, the university continuously secures its ranking amongst top 300 Asian institutions of science and technology by QS World University Rankings. The university is organized in 7 science faculties with administration of 24 research departments.
UET has 10550 students, 688 teachers out of which 122 are PhD. UET shows 16: 1 STR while Stident to PhD teacher ratio is 86:1. It has more than 15 Student’s Societies / clubs and 23 academic disciplines with thousands of distinguished alumni. The Lahore Campus is spread over an area of 644780 Sq-feet.
University of Central Punjab (UCP), earlier based as Punjab Group of Colleges, started operation in 1999. Following a restructuring in 2004, the PCBA and PICS operate under the Faculty of Management Studies and Faculty of Information Technology of the University of Central Punjab respectively. The Punjab Colleges of Commerce and the Punjab Law College respectively function under the Faculties of Commerce and of Law of the University of Central Punjab. The Faculty of Engineering (FOE) has was introduced in 2002.
It has more that 8000 students, 356 teachers, 93 PhD teachers, showing student-teachers ratio of 22:1 and Student to PhD teacher ratio of 86:1. UCP has 26 student societies. It has Business School, Faculty of Information technology, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, School of Media & Communication Studies, Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Law. Alumni number is very large estimated at more than 12000 since the establishment of university. It’s campus is spread over 500,000 square feet area.
University of Management and Technology (UMT) is a project of ILM Trust. The Trust started its educational pursuits 19 years back by establishing Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). The institute received degree-granting charter first as the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in 2002. Later, on 16 June 2004, IMT became University of Management and Technology through the passing of a similar Act by the Punjab Assembly. UMT has 50+ clubs and student societies and it is offering degree in 32 disciplines including Accounting, Agribusiness, Aviation Applied Sciences, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Business and Information Systems, Commerce, Computer Science, Economics, Education, Educational Leadership Management, Electrical /Telecom Engineering, English Language Teaching, Food Sciences, Information Management Systems, Islamic Banking, Islamic Thought and Civilization, Law, Linguistics, Media and Communication, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nutrition Sciences, Organizational Development and Change, Physiotherapy, Radiological Sciences, Sales and Marketing, School Management, Social Enterprise Management, Social Sciences, Supply Chain, Technology Education, and Textiles, Industrial Engineering. University of Lahore(UOL) was established in 1999 under the Ibadat Educational Trust and was granted degree awarding status in 2002. The University of Lahore (UOL) has 3 campuses in Lahore, 2 campuses in Islamabad & 1 in Sargodha, Pakpattan and Gujrat. The University of Lahore has 7 Campuses, 11 Academic Faculties, 2 Technology Parks, 32 Academic Departments, 119 Degree Programs and teaches 2,954 courses. It has 21940 students, 844 teachers, 150 PhD teachers showing a ratio of 26:1 while stuent to PhD teacher ratio is 146:1. UoL has 27 student societies. It has Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Information & Technology, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Arts & Agriculture, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Sciences. Its alumni are more than 30,000 and Area of University is more than 100 acres.
