Symposium on “Addiction Scenario in Pakistan”

LAHORE: A symposium “Addiction Scenario in Pakistan- Challenges and Best Treatment and Rehabilitation practices,” was organized by joint initiative of Pakistan Psychological Association, Lahore, King Edward Medical University Psychiatry Department, Social Work Department University of Punjab and Addicts families support group.

Through this initiative psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers joined hands in combating addiction in society. First day of the symposium held at Psychiatry Department Mayo Hospital and second day at Social work Department Punjab University. Brigadier Mahmoodul Hassan of Anti NarcoticsForce was the chief guest speaker. Other speakers, resource persons were DrAftab Asif, Dr Usman Hotiana, DrNaumana Amjad, DrRafiaRafiq from Institute of applied Psychology, MrsSaimaMajeed from Pakistan Institute of mental Health, MsBushraNaheed of Social Work Department, MsQudsiaNashee from Limits College, Mr Usman Rasheed from Fountain House, DrPirzada from MAO college, Mr Hamid Nawaz and Drhumayon of RoshanRaasta Rehab and Dr Imran of Bridge Rehab, and Mr Zulfiqar from addiction consultancy.

Four recovering addicts shared their journey of recovery which were very inspiring. Psychology students, clinical interns from Mayo hosital, Limits college and PIMH teams from Addiction Canada and medical students attended the symposium on both days. Chief organizers were DrAftab Asif, Dr Usman Hotiana, Dr Naumana Amjad, DrRafiaRafiq and QudsiaNashee.

Dr NaumanaTalks, poster presentations, panel discussions and workshops were held. The symposium ended with a future collaboration plan to create awareness and work in partnership as a mental health team of psychologists, doctors, psychiatrists and social workers in collaboration with Government of Pakistan Anti Narcotics Board to develop effective prevention and treatment and care.
